We
are a small motley group. Flo is the propagator, and has a hand in most everything
else. For the past 4 years she has served on the national board of the American Conifer Society, and is currently
the SE Region President of the ACS. She gives conifer talks frequently to
garden clubs, master gardener groups and other plant societies. But
hydrangeas are also a passion, so she talks about them, too!
Our emotional and structural support comes from my husband Joe, who spends
his spare hours designing, building, repairing, and tractoring. As if that
weren’t enough, he is now our master grafter, and has propelled the
nursery into such fun plant material as the pines, Abies species and
cultivars on Abies frima rootstock,
Japanese maples, witches brooms of all kinds. He is my rock, and also
the foundation of many recent improvements. We
work hard. We love what we do. We're always eager to learn something new, and
to continue to improve what we already know. I owe a great inspirational debt
to Professors Michael Dirr and Allan Armitage. Their knowledge and enthusiasm
first encouraged my passion for plants. The present nursery and all its
potential would not have been possible without the generous support and
guidance of the late J C Raulston. His tireless, selfless efforts on behalf
of the horticultural industries set a high standard for me, both for my
business and my own personal life. The N C State Arboretum, which now bears
his name, has also been an invaluable asset.
